Storm Prediction Center Definition: Haines Index
A higher number corresponds to higher values of two key ingredients for conditions supportive of wildfires: 1) low level humidity and 2) stability.
The values below represent the sum of daily (~6 a.m. to ~6 a.m.) Haines Index values for grids in the United States.
Grid cell counts of at least low (Haines index = 4), moderate (Haines index = 5), or high (Haines index = 6) fire risk are communicated on this page.
Larger numbers (darker colors) represent larger areal coverage of specific Haines Index values.
Smaller numbers (lighter colors) represent smaller areal coverage of specific Haines Index values.
A lower number for a day does not mean zero risk, as the risk could be regional or localized in nature.
A low, moderate, and high risk corresponds to low to high values of two key ingredients for conditions supportive of wildfires: 1) low level humidity and 2) stability
